Here are the four steps I have followed in order to save my money, and my time, when buying knives. If followed they will help you do the same. Here they are: Five Steps for Buying a Knife 1st- Legality: make sure the knife your about to buy adheres to the laws in the area where you are goi  2nd- Use: determine what you need your knife to do. This seems like a no brainer but you would be surprised how many people will buy a knife on a limited budget just because it looks cool or could do something that they didn't really need. also don't get caught up looking for the "perfect" knife that will do everything. You wont find, it believe me I've looked just get a knife that does the thing you need it to do.  3rd- Do YOU like it: if you buy a good knife that suits your need but u don't like it,  4th- Maintenance: before buying a knife be sure that you are going to be able to keep it in good condition and sharp. Certain blade styles can be hard to sharpen if you aren't experienced enough in sharpening. Also some higher carbon knife steels (non-stainless) can rust and stain if not properly cared for.
